The Genre - Just You And Me

Much-anticipated deep house finally sees the light of day on Empty Archive.

Played this on my last episode of Full Bag on Skylab Radio and it also features on a forthcoming mix for Daisy Records' Inner Sound Series.

This was a small press prize after a full blown Discogs rabbit hole.

One of the artists, Damian Matthews, featured on a few small Australian labels in the early 2000s.

He appeared on this Millenima compilation, the label's only release, as Damo Diggler with a track called Ho Down.

Nothing from the release was available online, but fortunately there was a seller who was travelling to Melbourne regularly and I managed to grab a copy from him in the car park of a mammoth warehouse in Campbellfield.

He bought a friends collection and had no real idea about the record, but clearly his friend had given it a good run as its riddled with BPM and key stickers. He also explained the label was blacked out because his friend used to colour in his records so that others couldn't tell what they were.

Ho Down turned out to be a boring edit of Boz Scaggs classic Lowdown. But Just You And Me is a tasteful, distorted, disco deep house gem.

The Genre, aka Enzo Pannazzo, aka D-Genre, also released a version of this as Just You & Me on their 2002 album Leisure Play, which has undistorted and sometimes autotuned cheesy vocals at the front of the mix. This rip seems like an elegant and understated dub version, even if it was released so much earlier.

I'm so lucky to be able to share it with the web.

The Soul Immigrants - Migration (D.S.P. Club Mix)

Straight-up house from Canadian brothers Yogi and D'Pac Patel illuminated on the channel today.

In the early 1990s the two were were regular collaborators across the border with seminal Detroit house labels like KMS, Serious Grooves and Prescription.

Their collaborative releases together as The Soul Immigrants came in later in the 1990s and back in Canada on labels such as Crash records and Nick Holder's DNH.

Migration (D.S.P. Club Mix) comes via Hannover label ProgCity in 1997, which might explain why it is less sought after than US releases. D.S.P. is an alias of D'Pac that stands for Different Shades Production.

From a time when Garage sounded like Garage House and it didn't matter which side of the pond you were on. Full frontal piano stabs and swung out rhythms make this a great cheap pickup!

Zack - I Wanna Be The Only (Vocal)

Dug this one up from a bargain shelf this week and stoked to find a true diamond in the rough.

Both mysterious artist Zack and suburban New York label Solid-Gold Records look to have only released this record, with very small amounts pressed.

Only credited producer DJ White Rock has released any other work, including another particularly rare hip-hop 12-inch from the 1990s and a smooth jazz album from 2017. Quite the hiatus.

I Wanna Be The Only shines as an underground artefact of street-soul elements present in the US. There are clear tropes of New-Jack Swing and Hip-Hop, but drum programming and vocals synonymous with UK Street Soul, showing the movement made it across the Atlantic.

Shattered to be missing the original picture sleeve, with a superimposed photo of an iced-out, raw Zack against a cloudy night sky, but glad a copy somehow made it to the floor of record shop on the other side of the world.

Skiebäck – Tibet

New upload is some underappreciated IDM from seminal German deep house label Raum... musik.

Got heaps into Raum lately, particularly digging their Dave and Junkie Sartre releases, and found a copy of this in Thornbury. After copping for the pensive Art of Noise, I was pumped to discover Tibet on the flip.

Skiebäck is one of many projects by Jacek Darnowski and Michel Niepenberg. Big mention also goes to their Tojami Session project and the one release they had as Cascata which is big underground bomb. Heavily contemplating getting a copy shipped down to the island

Tibet is sweet, warm and intriguing. These guys make beautiful music and I am glad to have some on my channel.
