Underground b-side cut from legendary Aussie outfit Single Gun Theory, via even more legendary label Volition records up on the channel now!
I've already posted some work by one third of Single Gun Theory, Pete River-Carnacc, which you can read here. I've also previously uploaded some stuff from Volition here.
First heard this one on fellow archive Volt.2023, and they remarked that this remix single rarely made it online. I then found a copy in the PBS archives, had a proper listen to this b-side and luckily was able to snag a copy in the northern suburbs.
Single Gun Theory were a big name in Australian electronic music, carving a niche in burgeoning electronic and industrial synth-pop scene of the late 1980s. This single came off their final album, Flow River Of My Soul in 1994.
Rather than the raw, experimental sound they Single Gun Theory had made their name on, things in Australia were moving toward progressive house and primed for the trance explosion that I so often lament.
While Single Gun Theory might have been the height of their fame, Subglobal Impact, or David Corbett, who are credited with the remix here, have very little other work out there. They contributed one other track to Melbourne based Sirus Music, which is trance-y, eurodance-y and hard for me to listen through!
Luckily, apart from one overly flanged breakdown, Metaphysical (Subglobal Dub) stays away from anything too cheesy. The bassline, samples and intergalactic synth rolls are given space to shine. But what I think really ties it all together is the percussion.
The offbeat, shuffled snares give the tune an almost garage house sound, which I think contrasts really well with the techno and trance typicalities. I find that when I listen to this it's the percussion that sets it apart as a mix worth sharing, from a deep back catalogue of one of Australia's great electronic groups.
