Dipping back in the Cosmetic Records catalogue today!
Picked this one up almost a year ago when I was getting into Tony Crea and Paul Main's label from the early 2000s. I uploaded a couple of Moisture Rich Foundation tracks from the first Cosmetic release but I slept on this one at that time.
I played the a-side, which also appeared at the time on some Ministry of Sound compilations, while covering VG+ on PBS last year, but then it just sat on the shelf.
Butch Le Butch is still pumping out edits and hosting parties, after being a big time player in Melbourne's disco dance scene for over 20 years. While some of those more recent productions don't quite hit for me, much like the other two cuts on this record, Diablo (7th Dub) is a hidden deep gem.
The organic percussion sample, dubbed out and stretched to the limit, is hypnotic. While in the original version some of the horns and instrumental samples dominate things too much, the overzealous echo of almost every element creates a disco haze that envelopes you in this version.
These twisted, wonky and enthralling edits are the ones I really enjoy. Would love to see this work late at night in a smoke-filled room!
