Afterglow Mix

Just posting about another mix!

This one is for Naarm based mix series Afterglow. Another all vinyl mix changing it up with some balearic sounds.

Strawberry Jam - Amor (Take A Chance) [Groove to the Scats Mix]

 Intriguing street soul breakbeat dub mix here from Strawberry Jam on Footprinz Records. 

Picked this one out at Liquorice Pie in Collingwood Yards for the simplicity of the label, and found researching this record anything but simple.

A bit more info on this track can be found on the music video for the vocal mix uploaded by Henry Chapparo, who is also listed as a producer.

The video lists a Victorian production company, looks to be shot in Melbourne and marks the date in February 1992. 

The track seems synonymous with that period of small scale, Australian, electronic music desperately trying to sit somewhere between pop and house taking heavy influences from the UK. 

The video provides an intimate window into the heart of small time Australian electronic groups, and while the vocal has aged, for mine the Groove to the Scats Mix still hits today!

Salsalito - That Beat & Groovin

 Double upload here from a compilation I hold very dear.

Picked it up from Greenhouse Records in Edinburgh (big tip!) for the many really classy deep house numbers and the spelling of 'tunes.'

Salsalito was an alias for Alan Barnes and Andrew Hughes, UK producers, who's most popular stuff is under the alias Soft Sugar. 

Some Soft Sugar stuff is now very expensive and this double vinyl becomes an affordable option for fans of early 1990s UK house sounds.

These are the two cuts not available online, both bangers too! Particularly the downtempo 'That Beat' becomes a versatile track.

'Groovin' also features on an upcoming mix of mine for Crumpler Radio. Stay tuned!

Skydiver - Think

Picked this one up from a market in Madrid for one euro. Took a gamble on it, months later when I actually got to listen I was pleasantly surprised. 

The title tune has a catchy vocal hook and squelching sounds reminiscent of a 303 yet playfully not quite acid. The Piqantrax label seems like a small burnout early 2000s UK house edit label. 

According to the promo insert Ricky Morrison said "reactions are phenomenal and it has become a concrete rock in his box." I can't say the same but I'm glad I took the punt on it.
