Subq – Anyway You Want It ([Love] Tattoo Remix)

The final rip of bits I used for my Vitamine mix is now up on Empty Archive.

A rare vocal cut that I believe has aged well, this one comes via Warner Music Australia sublabel Kompactr recordings.

Kompactr put out a few compilations and 12 inches from various Australian producers around the turn of the millennium, in particular some Australian garage from Illpickl and early Pnau releases.

Subq is a collaboration from Michael Kirkilis and Anthony Abicair, who had his own quiet solo career appearing on Kompactr compilations.

Vocals feature an uncredited male (maybe Michael himself?) and Patricia Patterson who also sung for Nathan G and on Pnau's second album.

What really makes this cut stand out is remix work by Stephen Allkins as [Love] Tattoo. A pioneering Australian DJ in the late 1980s and 1990s, Allkins was an often collaborator with the legendary Robert Racic and featured heavily in the Hussle Recordings catalogue.

The mix is stripped back, letting the vocal shine as sharps stabs echo across the bubbling bassline.

A real gem of the club music in Australia before the euro house and trance swing took over, and a perfect track for my Vitamine FM mix!
