Cuts from Living In Jamnation

Two cuts from little seen compilation on Australian label Gulp Communications. Full of classic productions from the legendary likes of Andy Rantzen and Sherriff Lindo, I'm glad to share a few of these yet unheard tracks.

The first is from label head Andrew Kornweibel, who also had success under alias Friendly and co-produced as Nutcase & Papachubba which reappeared on Best Effort in 2021. This time he appears as Soda U, with a haunting leftfield pop cover of Judie Tzuke's Stay With Me Till Dawn from 1979.

The final track of the compilation is a downtempo trip-hop number from atone. Written by Andrew Fitzgerald, who was later joined in the group by vocalist Gina Mitchell and legendary underground dub producer based in Australia Ali Omar. Full frontal drum programming along with shimmering pads and eerie keys close out the compilation beautifully.

Pumped to have them both on! And pumped to have this comp. The inside reads: “it’s the space between the beats that gives us energy,” I think a great summation of this comp and the creative crux of the underground Australian dub movement of the early 2000s.

Also big tip in Australian dub re-issues Efficient Space is about to repress a bunch of Ali Omar (former member of atone as mentioned) for a new album Hashish Hits. Don't sleep on that!

My Sound - Rio (Jazzy Club Mix)

Catching up on a post during summer holidays here in Melbourne!

This one is another Japan pickup, courtesy of U.N.I.T.Y. records, who have already previously featured on the channel with Driving.

Rio (Jazzy Club Mix) is the deepest cut of the E.P., which consists of versions of Brazillian jazz oldie Rio written by Roberto Menescal and Ronaldo Boscoli, who are also credited as songwriters on this record.

U.N.I.T.Y. seems to have represented a lot of small time producers, with this being My Sound's only production as it was for the earlier record I posted from Ooh Baby.

Sometimes Latin sounds in house get a little too cheesy for me, which is also the case with other cuts off this record. But for the Jazzy Club Mix the playfulness of the Latin percussion works beautifully with the light keys and vocals for an uplifting deep house hit I am happy to have on the channel.
