Shades of Black - Mellow (909 Beats)

Pretty honoured to be able to upload the last cut that featured in my Crumpler Mix.

This one comes from Shades of Black a.k.a. Toyin Agbetu (a.k.a. Soul Connection, Nemesis, 2 Tuff) on the incredible Intrigue label.

Agbetu's work in the early UK house, street soul and bleep scene is unparalleled, not to mention his more recent work as a civil rights academic. He has a hand in such a broad swathe of unique and exciting music from the 1990s and it is a pleasure for me to shine a light on one of his lesser known works.

Mellow (909 Beats) features stripped-back drum machine rhythms along with mesmerising piano and flute melodies, elements synonymous with Agebtu's production.

The Sundown Kid - Paganini's House (Hard House Mix)

Next upload brings together a celebrated Italian virtuoso and the late 90s American house sound, also featured on my Crumpler Mix from earlier this month.

The Sundown Kid is the alias on this release for Mike Moses (also head of this small label) who had a number of release across the big labels of the US like Nu Groove, Strictly Rhythmn and Maxi under many different aliases.

For this track he brings in Caprice No. 24 composed by Italian violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini, to questionable effect. For me, the misguided use of a past masterpiece makes this an even more attractive bargain bin jam than the pumping electro bass and screeching harmonica.

This is also a perfect example of why you should always pick up a Hard House Mix, as there is often less hard house hallmarks present than the name suggests.

Paganini's probably rolling in his grave when you play this, and I feel like Moses probably wouldn't have it any other way.

Accessories to Murder - So In Dub

Another one from my digging trip up in the Gold Coast, but the first upload already feature on my Crumpler Mix!

Insane b-side dub cut of mysterious one-release outfit Accessories To Murder from the golden age of low pressing, UK Garage white label releases.

Vocal sample taken from 1994 pop house hackjob, Duke's So In Love With You, which most may know from the Full Intention Mix from 1997 which seems to be playing at almost every house party in Melbourne in the last 12 months.

Giving the classic vocal the  UK Garage treatment, So In Dub, will forever be in my bag. While researching was glad to see that my copy of the Full Intention Mix has skyrocketed from $5 to $80, and hoping that this cut is soon to get similar recognition.
