Shantel - Crazy Over You

Some stripped-back soul from Miami up this week from the bargain bin at Skydiver Records.

Raw percussion and vocals from Shantel combined with the P-man's haunting phone message make this a forgotten hit I had to take home.

Nuu-Sunn Records had a few small releases through the early 1980s and 1990s, with Chuck Roberson's Lolly Pop man being the only release that really picked up. Shantel similarly only has a few freestyle releases, while P-Man has a comparatively large back catalogue of hip-hop with the Polo Boyz or as Young & Restless.

Here the two combine for a under-the-radar soul jam that I'm happy to share on the channel even if it is a bit slower than some of my latest uploads.

Presenting BPM on PBS

Finally got out of the graveyard slot and hosted BPM last night on PBS!

Brought a few of my more intense tech house and techno records with some stuff from Dave Angel, Stacey Pullen and DJ Spence among others.

Listen back here.

Like Honey - Sweet - Like Honey

This week we have an unposted early UK Garage vocal banger from producer Paul Myers.

Picked this up blind from the floor of a record shop with no listening station last week and couldn't believe how well my $8 gamble paid off.

Clearly taking inspiration from seminal label Nice N' Ripe, Myers (as Like Honey) brings us a forgotten gem of the early UK scene, where percussion was oversaturated and white labels were everywhere.

Of particular note on this release is the label marketing from Hot Tomato, claiming "Choose Hot Tomato For Best Luxury Life And Family Warmth" and that this record is "33 Revolutions per minute stereophonic Time & Time Again 2 HOT."

Light hearted fun and naivety in design and in sound showing electronic music doesn't always have to be brainy.

Pick it up before it blows up.

Jenni Forbes - Dream On (Kathys Song) [Bad * Sample Mix]

This week we have some Australian deep house from pop artist Jenni Forbes.

Forbes only had a few CD releases in the early 1990s on megalabel Mushroom Records. Dream On (Kathys Song) seems to be her most publicised release, with a quintessentially 90s music video available on  YouTube providing a window into her early career.

Luckily in this Bad * Sample Mix all of the cheesy pop percussion has faded away, leaving a restrained, delicate deep house cut.

Building in and out of crescendos with beautiful pads and a particularly driving keyboard solo, lucky this one did get the trance treatment of so much Australian electronic music in the 1990s.

Audio Vitamins on PBS

Last Friday morning I covered Audio Vitamins on PBS for Johnny Alexander!

Johnny runs a Balearic, disco and deep house show every fortnight and I tried my best to keep up the vibe last week.

The Afro Boys - I Need You (Vocal Mix)

Next up on the archive 1992 breakbeat bomb from The Afro Boys.

A huge grin spread across my face as soon as I put this one on for the first time after sitting on the floor for a few hours in a non-descript record shop in Fitzroy North. Still can't really believe this UK white label banger ended up in Melbourne.

The Afro Boys bring the beautiful pads and hot percussion for all these four cuts, low tempo making it particularly good for working into techno and house. Vocal Mix definitely my favourite here, but also noticed the great Secret Squizza giving some love for the Brain Damage Mix last week.

Warrior Records also definitely worth checking out for  a bunch of 90s UK early breakbeat and hardcore bits, particularly love them working the silhouette of athlete Tommy Smith into the logo.

Buy it while it's cheap!
